Any Previous? Latics v Bristol City

Latics and Bristol City have met 28 times down the years, with us grabbing just the 6 wins, it’s fair to say that the Robins have had the better of things so far.

The first time we met Bristol City was early in the 1984/85 season, a Division Three fixture at Ashton Gate saw us suffer a 2:0 defeat in front 7,840 spectators.

The first meeting up here in Wigan came at Springfield Park on 23 April ’85 and ended a little more palatable, 2:2 with Gary Bennett and Steve Walsh scoring the goals in front of 2,423 fans.

Last Tim Out - Latics 0:2 Bristol City

The last time we met was on the 11th January 2020, a home defeat had the Latics in all sorts of trouble in the league, dropping down to 23rd position, but we only lost 3 games out of the next 19 to go on an amazing run only to be thwarted by a points deduction due to the club being placed into administration.

Latics – Marshall; Byrne, Kipre, Naismith, Robinson; Morsy, Williams (Gelhardt), Evans (MacLeod); Lowe, Dowell; Windass (Garner)

Latics Classic Bristol City 0:1 Wigan Athletic

Whenever we play Bristol City I am taken back to Friday the 10th January 2003.

Both clubs vying for promotion, the Latics top of the table, Bristol City in 4th spot but 10 points behind the league leaders, a must win game, the Sky cameras were at Ashton Gate along with 13,151 spectators as Peter Kennedy’s 49th minute strike won the match for the Latics and put us 12 points clear of the chasing pack.

Latics – Filan, Eaden, De Vos, Jackson, Mitchell, Dinning, Kennedy, McCulloch, Teale, Liddell, Ellington

Highlights – Bristol City 0-1 Latics

Bristol City Current Form

Bristol City haven’t started the season off too well, 2 defeats in the league, Hull away and Sunderland at home, currently 23rd in the table with 0 points from 2 games.

Last season, Bristol City’s 23 away games brought 23 points from 7 wins, 2 draws and 14 defeats, Bristol City had the 6th worst away record in the Championship in 2021/22.

Player To Watch – Andreas Weimann

Andreas Weimann

Signed in July 2018 Andreas Weimann has enjoyed arguably the best football of his career at Bristol City.

The 31 year old had an excellent campaign last season, scoring 22 goals and making 10 assists, those 22 goals came from just 81 attempts and Weimann has started the new season off in just the same vein with 2 goals in the opening 2 games.
