PWU Podcast Player of the Season

It’s not been the greatest of seasons by any stretch of the imagination, but one thing that really did shine was the effort put in by the lads and that is something that should be rewarded, so it is time to think about which player has been the standout as we open our Player of the Season poll.

This year the voting will be via a specifically created email address pwupots@gmail.com

So who is your choice as Wigan Athletic player if the 2023 season?

Personally I feel that this season it is difficult to choose because we have struggled from the inconsistency of the managerial changes and also the step up in class resulted in a different way to approach games. There is also the question of what criteria to use to help you make that choice.

Some people argue that goals win you games and look to the leading goal scorers from the squad, but there are also players who score the big goals, the ones that really do win you games, think Jack Whatmough against Huddersfield, Thelo Aasgaard against both Luton and Millwall and of course Will Keane regularly and most recently away at Stoke.

Others look to the defence, ‘success is built from the back’ is a term often used in football and we have had some good performances across the back line this season, Jack Whatmough an obvious contender, but forcing his way through the ranks and emerging as a player with immense potential, Charlie Hughes.

Max Power played in every game under four different managers, as has James McClean both play with their hearts on their sleeves, Christ Tiehi came in through the January transfer window and instantly won over the supporters with his displays in the middle of the park.

Our man of the match polls throughout the season have had 19 different winners, below is a list of the players who have picked up that particular accolade.
