Meet The Ref - Latics v Accrington Stanley

Latics are scheduled to kick off the New Year with a home game against fellow Lancastrians, Accrington Stanley, the man entrusted to keep the game flowing will be Carlisle official, Anthony Backhouse.

Anthony Backhouse

The 29 year old Cumbrian is in his fourth season on the National List and he's refereed the Latics on three previous occasions, our 1:0 home win over Northampton Town in September 2017, booking both Michael Jacobs and, not surprisingly, Sam Morsy.

Last season he was in charge of our demolition of MK Dons at the DW, a really entertaining game in which we ran out 3:0 winners, Curtis Tilt ending up with a yellow card. Earlier this season he took charge of our home draw with Wycombe Wanderers.

Backhouse has nine Accrington games under his belt, including their 7:1 demolition of Bolton in late November 2019.

Anthony Backhouse has already reached the top in one respect, he refereed at Wembley, the 2017/18 National League Play-Off final between Tranmere Rovers and winners Forest Green Rovers.

“Officiating at Wembley was a fantastic experience” says Anthony

“Yeah but have you witnessed your team winning the FA Cup there?” replies Barry.

Any Previous? Latics v Fleetwood Town

The Latics and Fleetwood may have had a fair few battles down the years in non-league football, but as Football League clubs the two sides have only met on eight occasions.

The first of those eight came at the DW Stadium in September 2015, a crowd of 8,300 witnessed a Latics 2:1 victory with goals from Jordan Flores and Michael Jacobs, in the Fleetwood team that day was Jamie Proctor who of course featured for the Latics in our battle against adversity last season

Sat on the bench for us was 19 year old defender Jack Hendry who had just been brought in from Partick Thistle, earlier this season Hendry was sold to Club Brugge for €10m.

We are undefeated in the league against The Cod Army, five wins and two draws in League 1, the only defeat coming in the EFL Cup last season away at Highbury Stadium, the Latics giving up a two goal lead in that particular game to lose 3:2.

Talking of giving up two goal leads:

Stand Out Game - Fleetwood Town 2:3 Latics

Earlier this season, on the 2nd of November we made the short trip north to sample some Fish & Chips from the famous ‘Highbury Chippy’ and, we also thought, stroll to three points, it didn’t quite work out that way, the chippy tea was good, but the game was a dramatic affair that tested the Latics’ mettle to the full.

Latics found themselves two goals down early in the second half, but fought back with the spirit of true champions to win the game with three goals in a ten minute spell, Lang, Keane and Tilt sealing the victory that took us to the top of the League 1 table.

Meet The Ref - Latics v Fleetwood Town

Hopefully we’re back at it on Wednesday evening when Fleetwood are scheduled to be in town, covid permitting, the man penciled in for this game will be Durham based referee, Martin Coy.

Martin Coy

Coy joined the National List of referees in August 2017. Last season he took charge of 31 games and only issued 82 yellow cards, he sent off 4 players – including Latics centreback Adam Long – all four were straight reds, no double yellows for Coy.

In fact in his five season career, so far, Coy has taken charge of 145 games issuing 15 red cards with all but four of those being straight reds.

Previous Latics Games

This will be Coy’s sixth Latics game, he took charge of our EFL Cup draw against Hull City back in August, we went through following a penalty shootout, two of the other four came last season, our 3:0 defeat away at Crewe  and the best forgotten FA Cup 1st round exit to Chorley at the DW Stadium.

The other two games both came in the 2017/18 season, again an FA Cup 1st round tie and a League 1 game.

The FA Cup game was against Crawley, which we won 2:1 and our League 1 encounter back in 2018 was away at Bradford, which again we won, this time 0:1 courtesy of a late Michael Jacobs goal.
