Latics travel down to Berkshire on Saturday for our last away game of the season, a must win game for both ourselves and opponents Reading , the referee for the game will be Hampshire based official, Andy Davies

Andy Davies

Davies is a very rare breed in the referee circles having been a professional football player for Gillingham, Portsmouth and Yeovil, before injury forced him to retire at the tender age of 28.

Not one to feel sorry for himself, Andy immediately through himself into becoming a ref and he graduated rapidly onto the National List in 2012 and two years later he was taking charge of Championship games.

Since becoming an EFL referee, Andy Davies has taken charge of 336 games, issued 1233 yellow and 57 red cards, pointing to the penalty spot on 91 occasions.

Previous Games

Davies has taken charge of thirteen Latics’ games previously, four of which have come this season, three wins, Birmingham and Rotherham away and Blackpool at the DW Stadium plus the defeat away at Sheffield United on Good Friday..

Davies last refereed Reading earlier this season, a 3:2 defeat away at Swansea back in October.

Meet The Ref - Latics v Millwall

Latics are back at the DW Stadium on Saturday when playoff chasing Millwall are in town, the referee for the game will be Wakefield official, Bobby Madley.

Bobby Madley

It feels like he’s been around for years, but surprisingly, Bobby Madley is still only 37. Following a break from the game, he is making his way back to the top of his profession and was promoted to the Select Group 2 of officials for the start of this season.

Madley became one of the youngest ref’s to make it to the top, when in April 2013, aged just 27, he took charge of the Premier League game between Southampton and West Brom, this came less than two years after he made his debut in the Football League in the PNE v Notts County League One game in August 2011.

The 2013/14 season saw Bobby make it to the Select Group of referees and officiate in five top flight games, though he ended the campaign in the bottom tier with a League 2 encounter between Burton and Chesterfield.

At the end of the 2017/18 season, Madley was taken off the referees list following some personal issues, he subsequently returned in October 2020 and has made his way back up the ranks refereeing back in the Premier League earlier this season, Brentford’s 1:1 draw with Wolves at the end of October.

Previous Games

Madley has taken charge of nine Latics’ games previously, our first encounter was the first game of our FA Cup winning run, Bournemouth at the DW in January 2013 and the latest encounter was the opening game of this season, the goalless draw with Preston at the DW Stadium in July.

Just the one Millwall game this season too, that was their 3:2 home win over Coventry in August.

So far this season, Madley has taken charge of 20 games, 11 of which have come in the Championship.

Latics head south down the M6 on Tuesday for a Championship fixture against Stoke City, the referee for the game will be West Yorkshire based official, Tom Nield.

Tom Nield

Tom Nield was appointed to the National List back in the 2017/18 season, his first game being Cambridge United 1:2 Carlisle United.

Of Tom Nield’s 31 games so far, only 1 has been at Championship level, but he has refereed 3 games in Japan, in the J2 League.
