Any Previous? Colchester United v Latics

Latics and Colchester United have met on 22 occasions down the years, we have history on our side, just about, with ten wins to the U’s eight and there have been four draws.

 

The first meeting coming on Friday the 30^th October 1981 at Layer Road in the 4^th Division, a crowd of 3,882 witnessed goals from John McMahon (11) and Peter Houghton (42) giving the Latics a two goal cushion going into the second half. 

 

There was a late flurry from the home side, with left back Phil Coleman (86) scoring late on, but Larry Lloyd’s men held on to take the points in this historic game.

Some familiar names in the Colchester team that day, Mike Walker in goal, he went on to manage both Norwich and Everton in the top flight, former Ipswich man, Roger Osborne, who scored the only goal in the 1978 FA Cup final as the Tractor Boys beat Arsenal 1:0 at Wembley and former Man City striker Tony Adcock.

 

The Latics completed the double over the U’s that season, winning the reverse fixture at Springfield Park 3:2. A Graham Barrow double and a Les Bradd goal securing the points in front of 6,747 spectators.

 

Last Time In Focus 

The last time we met Colchester was in the 2015/16 season winning the home game 5:0, but the away fixture was a little more competitive, finishing 3:3, Latics twice taking the lead in the first half, Yanic Wildschut (36) and Ryan Colclough (44) scoring only for a stunning Alex Gilbey (40) strike and a good effort from Elliot Lee (50) pegging us back.

 

Colchester scored from the penalty spot on the hour mark, George Moncur sending Jussi Jaaskelainen the wrong way, Will Grigg grabbed a 90^th minute equaliser to keep us in an automatic promotion spot.

 

Gavin Massey was a substitute for Colchester, coming on at the start of the second half.
