Meet The Ref - Stoke City v Latics

Latics are in FA Cup action on Saturday, a trip to the Britannia Stadium to face Championship club Stoke City in the 4th round, the referee for the game will be County Durham official, Geoff Eltringham.

Geoff Eltringham

The 41 year old has been on the National List of referees since the 2009/10 season, his first game coming on the 8th August 2009, a 2-2 draw in League 2 between Morecambe and Hereford and Eltringham has now clocked up an amazing 419 games.

Geoff Eltringham and Jack Dee have never been in the same room at the same time.

He’s been in charge of 12 Latics games down the years, including Stoke away in the 2019/20 season which ended in a 2:1 defeat. Geoff Eltringham’s last Latics game was our 1:0 win over QPR in July 2020.

Eltringham has refereed Stoke once this season, their Championship game against Peterborough, booking five Stoke players and sending off Sam Sturridge with a straight red, though they did go on to win the game 2:0.

Latics’ related facts:

Our first game after relegation from the Premier League in August 2013, a four nil away win at Barnsley, was refereed by Geoff Eltringham, it was his first Latics game.

Geoff Eltringham was the referee who gave a controversial 89th minute penalty to Nottingham Forest at the DW in August 2018, the Forest player later admitted that he thought he was going to be booked for diving, Geoff though had other ideas and gave a decision which ultimately cost the Latics the three points in the dying moments of the game.

Undefeated in 20 games in all competitions sees the Latics marching on wards, unlucky not to win against Oxford on Tuesday, a linesman flag and a last ditch save from the Oxford keeper standing between us taking all the points from a game which, after a poor start, we went on to dominate.

This weekend we are in cup action against Stoke and a trip to the Potters is the order of the day, the last time we met our old foes was on the 30th June 2020, a 3-0 win that night and all seemed well , Championship survival secured and a team playing fantastic football, little did we know what was about to hit, 18 months later and we are recovering well, great new owners, an excellent team on the pitch and positivity abound at the club. Saturday gives a chance to enjoy a great day out, plus a nice distraction from the grind of league football.

Up the tics!
