Any Previous? Latics v West Brom

Latics and West Brom have met 24 times down the years, with us just having the better of things with 10 wins and 5 draws, 9 defeats.

The first meeting came on the 25th September 1984, a 2nd round League Cup game, the first leg coming at Springfield Park, a goalless draw against top flight opposition for 3rd tier Latics was a good result, unfortunately we went down 3:1 in the second leg at the Hawthorns 2 weeks later, Colin Methven getting the consolation goal.

The last meeting was a Championship clash at the Hawthorns on the 29th February 2020, Latics winning the game 0:1 courtesy of a Sam Morsy strike on 73 minutes. This was the last away game played in front of spectators until we went to Sunderland on the opening game of the 2021722 season.

Meet The Ref - Latics v West Brom

Latics are back at the DW Stadium on Tuesday, a Championship game under the lights against West Brom, in charge of the game will be Northants referee, Andy Woolmer.

Andy Woolmer

The 56 year old has been a Football League referee since 2004, his first game being the League 2 goalless draw between Kidderminster Harriers and Notts County on the 10th August that year.

 Previous Games

The first of the twelve Latics’ games that he's been in charge of came on the 29th April 2014 away at Birmingham in the Championship and his last was the 1:2 away win at Plymouth last November as we stormed our way to the League One title.

Woolmer is now a veteran of 609 games in which he has handed out a grand total of 1,749 yellow and, surprisingly, just 67 red cards over the 19 seasons that he has been active in league football.

Andy Woolmer was last in charge of a West Brom game back in September 2021, a Championship encounter with Millwall at the Hawthorns, the game ended 1:1 with 4 yellow cards dished out, 3 to Millwall players and one to our old friend Cedric Kipre.

Five games for Andy Woolmer so far this season, his first to kick off the new campaign was a bit tasty, a goalless draw between Swindon and Salford which produced 7 yellow cards and one red for Swindon players, with Salford picking up just the one yellow.

Any Previous? Latics v Burnley

Latics and Burnley have met 23 times down the years, with us having much the better of things with 12 wins and 8 draws, just the 3 defeats, none of which have come in Wigan.

The first meeting came on the 29th October 1983, a Division 3 game at Turf Moor, Latics going down 3-0, but we did win the return fixture at Springfield Park with over 7,000 spectators witnessing a Latics win by 1:0.

A young Wayne Biggins was in the Burnley side that day and Bertie would go on to sign for the Latics over a decade later and was part of our squad that won the Division 3 title in the 1996/97 season.

The last meeting was a Championship clash at Turf Moor on Easter Monday 2014.

Burnley won 2:0 with goals from Ashley Barnes (22) and Michael Kightly (42), the Clarets clinching promotion to the Premeir League as a result of that win.

Latics – Al-Habsi; Perch, Barnett, Boyce, Crainey (Kiernan); McArthur, Collison, Gomez (McManaman); Fortune, Beausejour; McClean (Maynard)

Unused Subs – Carson, Caldwell, Maloney, Powell

Classic Encounter

A 5 star performance by the Latics back in April 1998, Paul Warne getting on the score sheet.

Highlights – Latics 5:1 Burnley

Burnley Current Form

Burnley sit one place below the Latics in the table with 6 points from 6 games, one win, 3 draws and a defeat.

On The Road

Burnley’s two Championship away games so far this season have brought three points, the Clarets travelled to Huddersfield opening the new campaign and securing a 0:1 win with an 18th minute Ian Maatsen goal.

They suffered defeat away at Vicarage Road a fortnight later.

Watford winning with the only goal of the game coming on the stroke of half-time by former Latics man, Tom Cleverley.

Player To Watch – Nathan Tella

Nathan Tella

23 year old wide attacking player on loan at Burnley for the season, coming through Southampton’s acclaimed Academy, Tella has 33 Premier League appearances under his belt and 1 Premier League goal.

Making the switch to the North West, Nathan Tella has already made a mark in the Championship, his 3 appearances for Burnley have produced 2 goals, both coming in last Saturday’s home 3:3 draw against Blackpool.

A player with bags of pace and excellent close control, Tella is going to be a threat this campaign for all sides he will face.

So far this season Nathan Tella has made 5 attempts to score, with 2 on target and both those going in the back of the net, one of which was an absolute screamer.
