We’re off down the M6 on Saturday to face Championship club and old rivals Stoke City in the 4th round of the FA Cup.
This will be only the second time that we have met the Potters in the FA Cup, the first time came back on the 4th January 2003 when 3rd tier Wigan Athletic travelled to 2nd tier Stoke City, we got a bit of a spanking that day, losing 3:0, Chris Greenacre (20 & 67) and Chris Iwelumo (31) on the score sheet.
Dave Beasant was on the bench for the Latics as we lined up:
John Filan; Scott Green, Ian Breckin, Matt Jackson, Nicky Eaden; Paul Mitchell, Jason Jarrett, Gary Teale, Peter Kennedy; Andy Liddell, Neil Roberts.
Our recent history against Stoke is quite good, just two defeats in the last thirteen games and just one in the last six at Stoke.
Stoke City Current Form
The Potters are currently 12th in the Championship with 39pts from 28 games, their form over the last eight Championship matches has been a bit of a disappointment with four defeats, two draws and just the one victory.
Player To Watch – Jacob Brown
23 year old striker, signed from Barnsley in September 2020, scored five goals in his first season at the Britannia Stadium, already on 7 this campaign and with 5 assists he is having a big impact on the team.
Also likely to be in the Stoke line-up are two ‘son’s of’ in Tyrese Campbell, the son of former Arsenal and Everton striker, Kevin Campbell and D’Margio Wright-Phillips, the son of Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Undefeated in 20 games in all competitions sees the Latics marching on wards, unlucky not to win against Oxford on Tuesday, a linesman flag and a last ditch save from the Oxford keeper standing between us taking all the points from a game which, after a poor start, we went on to dominate.
This weekend we are in cup action against Stoke and a trip to the Potters is the order of the day, the last time we met our old foes was on the 30th June 2020, a 3-0 win that night and all seemed well , Championship survival secured and a team playing fantastic football, little did we know what was about to hit, 18 months later and we are recovering well, great new owners, an excellent team on the pitch and positivity abound at the club. Saturday gives a chance to enjoy a great day out, plus a nice distraction from the grind of league football.
Up the tics!
