Any Previous? Rotherham United v Latics

Latics and Rotherham United have met 41 times down the years, Latics having the best of those meetings with 22 wins and just 12 defeats

The first meeting came way back in the 1935/36 season when we met in an FA Cup 1st round tie at Springfield Park.

The tie ended in a 2:1 defeat for the Latics, prolific striker Teddy Felton grabbing our consolation goal, later that season Felton was signed by First Division giants Huddersfield Town having scored 75 goals in 113 appearances for the Latics in just short of three seasons.

It would be 48 years before the two clubs would meet again, this time a Division 3 encounter, New Years Eve, 1983 once again at Springfield Park, this time the score line was reversed as the Latics ran out 2:1 winners.

Our last meeting was our first home game of this season back in August, a great occasion to be back at the DW Stadium watching football following what had gone on the previous 12 months with both the Latics through administration and life in general with the pandemic.

A late Will Keane goal gave us all the points as we scrapped a 1:0 win in what was a very tough game.

Latics – Amos; Darikwa, Whatmough, Watts, Robinson; Power, Naylor; Humphrys, Keane, Lang; Wyke

Subs – Jamie Jones, Cousins, Massey, Jordan Jones, Aasgaard, Carragher, Smith

Highlights - Latics 1:0 Rotherham United

Rotherham Current Form

Rotherham currently sit 1st in League One with 68pts from 31 games, their recent form is, WWWWW and they’ve won their last seven games in all competitions.

Rotherham’s last defeat was away at Fleetwood in January, incidentally Fleetwood are the last team to beat the Millers at the New York Stadium, 2:4, back in September.

Of Rotherham’s 15 home games so far this season in the league they have just two defeats, Fleetwood as previously mentioned and against Sheffield Wednesday in August, 0:2, they have two draws, Wycombe 0:0 and Crewe 1:1, the other eleven have all been wins.

Those 15 home games have produced 34 goals for Rotherham and just the 11 conceded, giving the Millers the best home record in division.

Rotherham haven’t conceded a goal in their last six League One games since losing away 1:0 at Fleetwood.

Player To Watch – Michael Smith

30 year old striker from Wallsend, Smith is now in his fifth season with the Millers having joined from Bury in January 2018.

The 6’ 3” goal getter is currently in the best form of his career with 18 goals and 6 assists from 33 games in all competitions this campaign. Smith has had 100 attempts on goal this season with 38 on target. A right footed target man and serious goal threat.

We totally dominated the game on Tuesday, Crewe looked a very poor side, destined for relegation but we had to dig deep and scrap for the three points, it took a bit of quality from James McClean and Callum Lang to break a stubborn defence.
There was once again a lot of consternation with the match officials, poor decisions and some terrible non-decisions left the Latics players, fans and management extremely frustrated, there also appears to be a real problem with time wasting and adding the correct amount of stoppage time on at the end of each half.
We came out of the game with the points though and a a clean sheet too, at this stage of the season it is winning games that matters and we are capable of playing under par and still winning, the sign of a side with a winning mentality and destined for success come the end of the season.

Friday brings the clash of the top two with our trip to Rotherham, both clubs are sitting pretty in the promotion places with not only points in the bag but also games in hand on the chasing pack, a draw wouldn't be a disaster for either and perhaps the result that both camps would accept prior to kick off, it'll be a tough game in front of a sell out crowd.

Up the tics!
