Meet The Ref - Latics v Wolves U23s

Latics are back in action at the DW Stadium on Tuesday in the EFL Papa Johns Trophy, Wolves Under 23s the opposition and in charge of the game will be Sunderland based official, Marc Edwards.

Marc Edwards

The 32 year old is in his third season as a National List official and has ref’d the Latics twice previously, both last campaign, our 4:3 home win over Accrington Stanley back in December and the 0:1 away win at Sixfields against Northampton Town on the 9th February.

Having served his apprenticeship in the National League, his first two seasons in the ‘Big Time’ saw him issue just two red cards in 58 games, one in each season, only one of those was a straight red. He does like awarding a penalty though, nine last season and one already this.

Edwards’ last game was the EFL Cup 2nd round clash between Stoke City & Doncaster last Tuesday, Stoke winning 2:0 with three yellow cards handed out.

Currently, Marc is working for a Sunderland based Housing Association group as Head of Asset Management and Investment.

Any Previous? - Latics v Portsmouth

Latics and Pompey have met 21 times down the years, the first of which came in our inaugural season as a Football League club, 26 September 1978, over 13,000 fans at Fratton Park witnessed the Division Four encounter, Pompey coming out winners by the only goal of a very tight game.

We won the return fixture at Springfield Park 2:0 in February 1979, our paths didn’t cross too many times over the following seasons and it would be another 26 years before we would taste victory again against Portsmouth, this time the two clubs meeting in the Premier League, Bonfire Night, 2005, Pascal Chimbonda and Jason Roberts scoring the goals that took the Latics up to 2nd spot in the top flight.

Always a tight affair, just 40 goals scored in the 21 fixtures, and a fixture where home advantage doesn’t appear to count for much, three of our six victories against Pompey coming down on the south coast, whilst they have won five times up in Wigan.

Last season played these facts out, an early season win for the Latics at Fratton Park by 1:2, then Pompey winning by the only goal of the game at the DW Stadium back in April this year.

Stand Out Game - Portsmouth 1:2 Latics (Evans & James)

I’ve picked this game for the unashamed reason of having another look at Tom James’ free kick, simply stunning, a glimmer of hope in a period of despair.

We had lost our opening two League 1 fixtures against Ipswich and Gillingham, knocked out of the EFL Cup by Fleetwood, deep in administration, no fans in the grounds, seemingly no hope then we go and pull a very good performance out of the bag and seal it with a goal of the season contender.

Meet The Ref - Latics v Pompey

Latics are back in League 1 action on Saturday when high flying and undefeated Portsmouth are the visitors to the DW Stadium, in charge of the game will be Staffordshire official, Chris Sarginson.

Chris Sarginson

Sarginson has 13 years experience in the EFL, just a handful of games at Championship level during that time, the vast majority coming in League’s One and Two. Subsequently our paths haven’t crossed often, just four times in fact, though he did take charge of our trip to Gillingham on the last day of March, last season.

Chris Sarginson and his whistle have made just three appearances this season with a game apiece in League One, League Two and the EFL Trophy.

His last game was the Exeter City 4:1 Bristol Rovers League Two game last Saturday.
