Latics have met Sunderland on 25 occasions previously, the majority of those games, 14, have come in the Premier League.
Our first meeting with the Mackems came in Division 3, in the 1987/88 season, a 4:1 defeat away at Roker Park in October 1987, that was followed by the infamous ‘mud slide’ game at Springfield Park in March ‘88 which ended 2:2.
We have already played Sunderland twice this campaign, unfortunately we lost them both, the first league game of the season, away at the Stadium of Light, despite taking the lead through a Gwion Edwards effort on 15 minutes, we fell to an Aiden McGeady penalty after 17 minutes and a 53rd minute Ross Stewart header.
The second game was at the DW Stadium in the third round of the EFL Cup in September, Nathan Broadhead and Luke O’Nien scoring the goals that gave Sunderland a 0:2 win and progress through to the 4th round.
Last season the Latics did the double over the Mackems, despite being in administration and everything that brought with it. Kyle Joseph with our only attempt in the game, scoring the goal that sealed our 0:1 away win in December.
The double was completed by a 2:1 win at the DW in April, Will Keane and Callum Lang on target after Charlie Wyke had given Sunderland the lead.

Sunderland currently sit 6th in League One with 56pts from 34 games, their recent form is, LLDLD.
Sunderland’s 17 away games so far this season in the league have brought 21 points from five wins and six draws and six defeats, Sunderland have scored 24 goals on their travels and conceded 33.
Their last ten League One games have brought just the one win – Portsmouth 1:0 – five defeats and four draws, the 6:0 defeat away to Bolton on 29 January cost then manager, Lee Johnson his job and he has been replaced by former Preston and Norwich boss Alex Neil.
Player To Watch – Alex Pritchard
Ross Stewart might be the man making the headlines with his 20 goals this season, but 28 year old midfielder, Alex Pritchard is the man that most things at Sunderland go through. With four goals and nine assists so far this season, all his goals coming in League One, Pritchard has been a shining light.
Premier League experience with Spurs (1), West Brom (2) and Huddersfield (44) and over 130 games at Championship level, Pritchard is a player of quality, hardly a blood and thunder player, he has picked up just 17 yellows and 1 red card in 239 games over the ten seasons that he has been active.
So far this campaign Alex Pritchard has committed 24 fouls whilst drawing 37, good on the ball, an eye for a pass and a real bit of quality in the final third.
