Meet The Ref - Latics v Crewe Alex

Latics face Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday at the DW Stadium, in charge of the game will be Birmingham official, Tom Reeves.

Tom Reeves

Tom Reeves is in his debut season as a League ref, having spent the past three years officiating in the National League where, surprisingly, he only clocked up 46 games over that time.

This will be his second Latics game, ironically his previous Latics game was our away visit to Crewe in the Papa John Trophy back in October, we lost 2-0 with Tilt, Kerr and Lloyd picking up yellow cards.

Reeves has refereed Crewe twice previously, both this season, both at Gresty Road and in consecutive games, he took charge of the Crewe v Cambridge League One game on Saturday 2nd October which ended 2:2, he then stayed over in his digs to take charge of our visit there in the EFL Trophy on the following Tuesday, the 5th of October, Reeves booked 2 Crewe players in each game, he’s nothing if not consistent.

A graduate of Warwick University, Tom spent five years as a PE Teacher before joining Coventry City’s Community team in 2018, as the PL Sport Manager working alongside former Sky Blues centre back and Head of Community, David Busst.

Tom Reeves’s last game was on Saturday 12th February, the League One fixture between Portsmouth and Doncaster Rovers at Fratton Park, Reeves issued just the one yellow card, going the way of the home side, Pompey won the game 4:0

It was a good performance as we came from behind to beat Charlton and get three points on the board. Will Keane back following injury and he not only had a good game, but also dispatched a 26th minute penalty to equalise Elliott Lee's early goal for Charlton.
It was a game with some strange decisions, or shall we say 'non-decisions' from the officials and also a very odd performance by the 4th official.

All's well that ends well, a new look Stevie Humphrys on hand to score a 74th minute winner following his introduction off the bench a few minutes earlier.

We have Crewe in town on Tuesday and there is an interesting preview from Stuart Price of The Railwaymen Podcast, Stuart tells us that Crewe are in turmoil, the players are poor, the fans have turned and there could be changes imminent, is this all a ruse to catch us off guard? Sadly, no Crewe are in a rate old state, hopefully they'll get things sorted but fingers crossed it is after Tuesday.

We have a debutante on the podcast for this episode, Emma steps in for Adam who is away on 'other' duties and she makes an excellent member of the team, thanks Emma.
