Any Previous? - Sheffield Wednesday v Latics

It’s back to league action on Tuesday as the Latics are on the road with a trip to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday.

We have met the Owls on 13 occasions previously with none of those fixtures goalless or producing a draw, 5 wins and 8 defeats for the Latics.

Our first two meetings both came in the FA cup and the Latics were a Northern Premier League club at the time, in December 1975 we went down 2-0 at Hillsborough a 2nd round tie in front of 12,436 spectators.

Two years later in ‘77 we met again at the same stage of the competition, this time at Springfield Park, a goal from local lad Maurice Whittle settled the game in Latics favour 1-0, a healthy attendance of 13,873 saw us progress past Jackie Charlton’s Wednesday onto the 3rd round where we came up against Birmingham City managed by Sir Alf Ramsey, that cup run went a long way to securing favour amongst the Full Member clubs of the Football League on our way to election in the following June.

Standout Game Sheffield Wednesday 0:3 Latics

On the 11th February 2014 the Latics played a rearranged game at Hillsborough, the original fixture had been abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch with the Latics winning by a James McClean goal.

The match came in the middle of an incredible 23 game run which the Latics recorded just two defeats and fifteen wins, we’d lost the previous game at Huddersfield and questions were asked, but this was the first of eight straight victories.

Two goals from Nicky Maynard and a Marc-Antoine Fortune effort were enough to give us our first and only win away at Hillsborough.

Latics – Al Habsi; Perch, Barnett, Boyce, Beausejour; McCann, McArthur, Watson, McClean; Waghorn; Maynard

Subs – Nicholls, Espinoza, Crainey, Kiernan, Gomez, McManaman, Fortune

Former Latics keeper, Chris Kirkland was in goal for Wednesday that night.

Our 20 game unbeaten run may have ended but we are still 12 undefeated in the League. Stoke was a good experience, we got a first glimpse of our new signings Glenn Rea and Jamie McGrath and they both had impressive debuts. A large following of fans made the most of the day and were in fine voice,

Looking forward to Tuesday we have a tough game away at Sheffield Wednesday, but I do feel we owe them one for the defeat at the DW back in September, I can see at least eight changes from Saturday's starting XI for this game and we should go into the match confident of producing a positive result.

Up the tics!
