Meet The Ref - Crawley Town v Latics

Latics are on the road to West Sussex on Tuesday for a first ever visit to the Broadfield Stadium to face Crawley Town in a League One clash, Derby based official, Richard Eley is scheduled to be in charge.

The 27 year old is in his 1st season as an EFL referee and Eley has only one full EFL game under his belt, Doncaster v Harrogate in League Two on the 25th January this year, though he did step up to take charge of the later part of the Stockport v Crewe game last season when he was 4th official, following an injury to ref Neil Hair.

Previous Games

Talking of 4th Official, Eley was 4th official for our opening game of this season, our 0:1 home defeat to Charlton in August.

As well as his one League Two game, Eley has been in charge of games in the National League (12) and the EFL Trophy (1) this season.

Also whilst we’re talking 4th officials, the scheduled 4th official is well known to everyone connected to the Latics, a certain Mr Alan Young, yes that one, just in case you can’t recall, he was the referee for our trip to Stevenage last season.

Pregame he told the players he intends to let the game flow and keep his cards in his pocket, he subsequently blew up 36 times, booking 11 Latics players, yellow carding Shaun Maloney and Graham Barrow, awarding a dubious penalty and sending off Callum Lang for two questionable yellow cards and showing a straight red to Stevenage player Alex MacDonald, all in a game without a strong challenge!
