Any Previous? Latics v Birmingham City

Latics and Birmingham City have met 26 times down the years, we are having slightly the better of things at the moment with 10 wins to Birmingham’s 7.

The first time we met Birmingham City was an FA Cup 3rd round tie, played on the 7th January 1978. Northern Premier League, Latics taking on a top flight side managed by World Cup winning manager, Sir Alf Ramsey.

Latics put up a spirited performance but goals from Trevor Francis (2) and Keith Bertschin (2) gave the home side a flattering scoreline of 4:0, but there was some consolation with Sir Alf being impressed with the professionalism of the club and promised to canvas on our behalf at the League AGM in June.

He was true to his word and subsequently, following a re-vote after tying with Southport, Wigan Athletic were voted into the Football League.

Classic Encounters

After failing in the playoffs and losing in the FA Cup semi-final at the end of the 2013/14 season the new campaign started with hope of a promotion push, Birmingham rolled up to the DW Stadium on the 30th August 2014 and were put to the word with a stunning display.

James McArthur made his final appearance for the club in this game.
