Meet The Ref - Portsmouth v Latics

Latics travel down to Portsmouth on Tuesday evening looking to get at least the one point needed to nail on promotion to the Championship, the referee for the game is Surrey based official, Craig Hicks

Craig Hicks

Hicks progressed from his lowly beginnings in the Epsom & Ewel Youth League, through to taking charge of the Surrey Senior Cup Final in 2016 and eventually into the Football League for the 2017/18 season, his first game being Port Vale 2:3 Wycombe Wanderers on the 12 August 2017.

This will be the second Wigan Athletic game that Craig Hicks has been in charge of, he previously refereed us away at Charlton back in August, Tendayi Darikwa and James McClean on the score sheet in a 0:2 win for the Latics, Jordan Jones picking up a yellow card.

Hicks’ has refereed Pompey on six occasions. Two of which came earlier this season, both at Fratton Park in the league and they won them both, Bolton 1:0 and Burton 2:1

Since becoming a National List official, Craig Hicks has clocked up 174 games, issued 532 yellow cards and 25 reds and forty penalties over the five seasons that he has been active.

Last Game

Craig Hicks’ last game in charge was the League Two fixture between Port Vale and Bristol Rovers at Vale Park on Monday 18th April, the match ended 1:2 to Rovers, 8 yellows were issued 5 of which went to Bristol Rovers players.

The last home game of the season, hoping for a grand finale to a glorious campaign, but we are Wigan Athletic and we just love to do things a little differently, none of the easy stuff here.
A draw against Plymouth was perhaps always on the cards, carrying rubber stamping of promotion over to Tuesday evening down on the South Coast at Portsmouth, we do have a few connections with them after all.

We did have opportunities to get it sealed, but a great save, a wayward finish, a bobble of the ball and a referee not prepared to make a decision all contrived to leave us waiting another four days at least.

So off down south on Tuesday, Jack Whatmough, Tom Naylor and manager Leam Richardson all returning to their old stomping ground, what a place to not only gain promotion, a draw would be enough, but also potentially win the title if we Sunderland do us a favour, yeah I know, against Rotherham, for one night only I'll be hoping for a Sunderland win.

Up the tics!
