Latics are back at the DW Stadium on Saturday, Cambridge United the visitors for the televised League One game as we attempt to stay on course not only for automatic promotion, but also to go up as Champions, the referee for the game will be Cleveland official, Ross Joyce.
Ross Joyce |
The 34 year old from Eston near Middlesbrough began refereeing as a punishment, let me explain, Joyce was sent off in a youth team game for a tirade of foul language aimed at the match official, as part of his punishment he was ordered to attend a six week refereeing programme.
Ross says - "It was a one-off, a cup game, which was important, and I lost my temper, got a bit upset and swore at the referee, so he sent me off for it
"The club I was playing for recommended I did the course and it went from there.
"I love being a referee. It's very enjoyable and exciting as every game brings a new challenge. It's a great way to be involved in the game and although it takes a lot of commitment, it's definitely worth it come a Saturday afternoon."
Ross Joyce was promoted to the National List of ref’s for the 2015/16 season, he has now got 248 games in League Football under his belt.
The first of his seven Latics game was our 3:1 home win over Chesterfield in his first season officiating in the League, January 2016.
Joyce has refereed us twice this season, Fleetwood away in November which we won 2:3 and the 0:6 win at Oldham in the Pizza Trophy on the 4th January.
Of Ross Joyce’s 31 games so far this season, 13 have come in League One, 9 in League Two, 4 in the EFL Trophy, 3 in the FA Cup and 2 in the EFL Cup.
Last Game
Ross Joyce’s last game in charge was the League One fixture between Rotherham and Charlton at the New York Stadium on Saturday 9th April, the Addicks won 0:1 and Joyce issued just the one yellow.
Joyce works as a sports development coach in his day job
Joyce has refereed Cambridge United ten times previously, but this will be his first Us game this season, the last time was in April last campaign when Cambridge lost 0:1 at home to Stevenage in a League Two game.
