Any Previous? - Lincoln City v Latics

Latics and Lincoln have met 28 times down the years, the Latics having the edge with fourteen wins to the Imps twelve.

The first meeting came in our 2nd season in the Football League, October 1979, a 2:1 win at Springfield Park in front of 5,454 fans, we lost the away fixture that season 4:0.

Although we played at Sincil Bank last campaign, it was behind closed doors due to the pandemic, the last time we met in Lincoln in front of fans was 15 Aug 1998, unfortunately we suffered a 1:0 defeat under ‘new’ returning manager Ray Mathias.

Classic Encounter

9th March 1996, a game full of goals, a bobbly pitch, classic 4th tier football, a few legends for both sides as the Latics ran out 2:4 winners at Sincil Bank against John Beck’s Lincoln City.

Colin Greenall, Gavin Johnson, Kevin Sharp & Mark Leonard on the score sheet for the Latics, whilst Colin Alcide and Gareth Ainsworth replied for the Imps.

Highlights – Lincoln City 2:4 Wigan Athletic

Last Meeting

We met Lincoln back in October on a Tuesday evening in the reverse fixture, with a goal in each half Lincoln found themselves two goals up going into the final stages of the game. The Latics piled on the pressure, hit the woodwork three times, plus had a Kell Watts goal disallowed for handball after the ref watched the replay on the big screen, Lincoln hung on until Gavin Massey scored a 95th minute consolation goal as we lost 1:2.

Highlights Latics 1:2 Lincoln

Lincoln City Current Form

Lincoln currently sit 18th in League One with 46 points from 41 games, their recent form is, LDLWD.

Lincoln’s last game was a 1:1 draw on Tuesday 5th April, away at Fleetwood. Behind at half-time to a Dan Batty 25 yard screamer, the Imps battled back in the second half and equalised on 65 minutes when Lewis Fiorini finished off a good move with a low drive.

Home Form

Lincoln’s 20 home games so far this season have brought 20 points, with 5 wins, 10 defeats & 5 draws, scoring 19 goals and conceding 25.

Player To Watch – Anthony Scully

Anthony Scully

The 22 year old striker signed from West Ham in February 2020 and is the current top scorer at Lincoln with 9 goals.

Scully didn’t manage to break into the first team at West Ham but he has made an impact at Sincil Bank, he scored Lincoln’s equalising goal last season at the DW Stadium after Callum Lang’s thunderbolt had put us one up. He finished last season with 17 goals in all competitions.

So far this season, Anthony Scully has made 30 League One appearances, he’s scored 9 goals from 67 attempts and made 7 assists, he’s committed 11 fouls and drawn 28, picking up just the one yellow card along the way. Scully has also completed 67 crosses, made 12 interceptions and won 14 tackles, suggesting he’s a bit of a live wire.

A Republic of Ireland U21 international, Scully has been attracting a lot of interest this season from clubs up the food chain and Michael Appleton will be hoping he can fend off that interest in his young striker ahead of the new season.

A footnote – Anthony Scully’s dad, Tony Scully played against the Latics for Cambridge United in our 4:1 victory at the then JJB Stadium back in March 2002, more on that game in next week’s article.
