Any Previous? - Ipswich Town v Latics

Latics make the long trek down to Suffolk to take on Ipswich Town at Portman Road, in an important fixture in the race for the League One table.

Our first encounter came in the League Cup 2nd round back in the 1992/93 season, the first leg at Springfield Park saw third tier Latics hold their Premier League visitors to a 2:2 draw, goals from Alan Johnson and Gary Worthington sent the home supporters, in the crowd of 2,684, home happy.

The second leg at Portman Road saw us go down 4:0, Ipswich went on to the ¼ finals that season and finish 16th in the Premier League, Chris Kiwomya scoring a hat-trick as Ipswich eased passed the Latics.

Scoring goals in both legs of the tie for Ipswich was left back Gavin Johnson who joined the Latics three seasons later and went on to star in our title winning side of the 1996/97 campaign.

With no wins in our last nine meetings we have to go back to March 2014 when two goals from James McClean and a Leon Barnett effort gave us all the points in a 1-3 win at Portman Road.

Latics Team – Al Habsi; Barnett, Ramis, Boyce, Perch; Gomez, McArthur, Tunnicliffe, McClean, Fortune; Waghorn

Subs – Carson, Kiernan, Crainey, McEchran, McManaman, Powell, Maynard

More recently we have managed just 4 points from a possible 27 against the Tractor Boys.

Latics Team - Filan; Green, De Vos, De Zeeuw, Jackson, McMillan; Dinning, Mitchell, Teale, McColluch; Liddell

Last Meeting

Latics drew 1:1 with Ipswich Town at the DW Stadium on Saturday 11th December 2021, just a week following the sacking of former Latics boss Paul Cook by Ipswich.

Callum Lang gave the Latics the lead on 22 minutes, that lead would have been increased but for some excellent goalkeeping by Christian Walton and the lino’s flag when it signalled Will Keane offside as he popped home Langs excellent free kick.

Conor Chaplin completely lost it and should have seen red , having been yellow carded for a foul on Tom Pearce he then stamped on the Latics left back, in front of both referee and assistant, but unbelievably no action was taken apart from a strong telling off.

James Norwood poked home for Ipswich after coming on as a second half substitute, Keane could have won it for the Latics, but he headed wide when it looked easier to score.

Latics – Amos; Darikwa, Whatmough, Tilt, Pearce; Power, Naylor; Edwards, McClean, Lang; Keane

Subs – Jones, Watts, Kerr, Aasgaard, Massey, Humphrys, Jordan Jones

Attendance – 10,296

Well, that wasn't what the doctor ordered, League One continually throws up surprises, both ourselves and MK Dons falling to defeat whilst out of form Rotherham grind out a result. This is going to the wire isn't it. We were well out of sorts but credit must go to Cambridge who looked very capable and caused us lot's of problems.

Four games to go, top of the league by four points and a game in hand on one of the two teams that can catch us, I'd have taken that three weeks ago let alone the start of the season, we've been magnificent throughout the course of this campaign, now we just need to hold our nerve and get the job done.

Ipswich away on Tuesday, a great insight into the Tractor Boys from our guest, Richard Moss in the 'View From The Home End', all I can say is bring it on, a win for us and defeat for MK Dons away at Oxford and we are up with three games to go, but let's not get carried away, a tough game in store at Portman Road, but we are excellent on the road. Exciting times.

Up The Tics!
