The Latics are back in action on Saturday when local side, Bolton Wanderers visit the DW Stadium for a League One fixture.
We have met our neighbours on 49 occasions down the years with the Latics just shading things with 19 wins to 17 for Bolton.
The first meeting came in the 1983/84 season when we were both in the third tier of English football, a crowd of 10,045 crammed into Springfield Park for the Boxing Day clash, Bolton coming out on top with a narrow 0:1 win.
Parity was restored in late April of the same season, a paltry crowd of 6,142 turned out at Burnden Park to see the Latics win the game 0:1.
The games in that first season set the tone in terms of tightness, with 35 of the 49 meetings between the two clubs ending in a draw or have been settled by one goal either way.
The Latics have eleven home victories, whilst Bolton can count eight victories in Wigan.

Player To Watch – Dion Charles
Dion Charles |
The 26 year old striker signed from Accrington Stanley in the January transfer window has certainly hit the ground running.
A former Blackpool youth player, Charles played for a host of non-league clubs, AFC Fylde, Skem United, Halifax and Southport, before finding his feet in the EFL with Accrington Stanley.
Costing Bolton a reported £320,000, Dion Charles put pen to paper on the 1st January this year on a 3 year deal and opened his goal account bagging the winner in a 0:! Away win at Shrewsbury four games into his Bolton career.
So far this season, Dion Charles has made 22 appearances, 6 of which came for Accrington, he’s scored 6 goals from 43 attempts, committed 40 fouls and drawn 40, picking up five yellow cards along the way.
Dion Charles has made a big impression with Bolton supporters, a physical striker who links up well with a second striker, his six goals have come from thirty-three attempts.
