The two clubs have met 15 times down the years, this season is the first time we have been in the same division for 20 years.
Latics’ have had the better of those 15 meetings with five wins and just two defeats, but with 50% of the games ending in a draw and only once being settled by more than the odd goal, it appears that the matches are always close run affairs.
The first meeting came back on the 19th October 1984, down at the Abbey Stadium, a crowd of 2,672 saw the first of what was to become a regular score line when the two sides met, 1:1, of the seven draws that have followed this result, another four have ended 1:1.
The last meeting between the two sides in Wigan was 20 years ago, 5th March 2002, an Andy Liddell hat-trick and a goal from Lee McCulloch saw the Latics run out 4:1 winners at the then named JJB Stadium.
The attendance was 3,535 and in the Cambridge team that day was winger Tony Scully, whose son, Anthony Scully scored against us last weekend for Lincoln in our 1:3 win at Sincil Bank.
Latics Team - Filan; Green, De Vos, De Zeeuw, Jackson, McMillan; Dinning, Mitchell, Teale, McColluch; Liddell
There has never been a goalless draw between the two clubs and there is only one game when a side was nilled, that was us unfortunately in April 1991, going down 0:1 at Springfield Park.
Last Meeting
Latics drew 2:2 with Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday 23rd November 2021, it was the day after the medical emergency involving Charlie Wyke.
Joe Ironside, on the stroke of half-time, and an Adam May effort on 53 mins put the Us two goals to the good, but in typical fashion the Latics rallied with Will Keane (84) and Callum Lang (87) scoring late goals, and we almost snatched it when Will Keane’s injury time effort was ruled out for who knows what.
Latics – Amos; Massey, Whatmough, Tilt, Pearce; Bayliss, Power; Edwards, McClean, Keane; Lang
Subs – Jones, Watts, Kerr, Aasgaard, Jordan Jones, Smith, Sze
Attendance – 4,101
Highlights Cambridge United 2:2 Latics
Cambridge United Current Form
Cambridge currently sit 13th in League One with 54 points from 42 games, their recent form is, LWWLW.
Cambridge’s last game was a 2:1 home win over Morecambe on Saturday 9th April.
A Sam Smith effort just before half time and a Joe Ironside 72 minute penalty sandwiched Cole Stockton’s obligatory Morecambe goal to give the Us the points and make their League One survival a mathematical certainty.
Away Form
Cambridge’s 21 away games so far this season have brought 23 points, with 6 wins, 10 defeats & 5 draws, scoring 25 goals and conceding 39.
Player To Watch – Joe Ironside
The 28 year old striker is in his second season at the Abbey Stadium, having signed from Macclesfield Town in the summer of 2020 and is the current top scorer at Cambridge with 14 goals in League One.
The Middlesbrough born striker came through the Sheffield United Academy, but only managed 16 appearances for the Blades in League One, he subsequently left and spent time around the non-league circuit before signing for Macclesfield in 2019.
It’s fair to say that Ironside has found his feet at Cambridge and played a big part in their rise from the lower reaches of League Two to become an established League One outfit this season.
Leading the line, Joe Ironside has scored 14 goals from 61 attempts, with 23 efforts on target, a big lad who isn’t afraid to of the physical side of the game, Ironside has committed 66 fouls and won 58 free kicks so far this campaign, surprisingly he has only picked up two yellow cards in his 34 appearances. He scored the opening goal when we met at the Abbey Stadium back in November.
