Any Previous? Watford v Latics

Latics and Watford have met 17 times down the years, with the Hornets having slightly the best of things with 7 wins to our 5.

The first meeting came in the FA Cup, a 3rd round tie in 1990, Watford winning that game 2:0 at Vicarage Road.

Our first win came in the 1997/98 season, the first season we were paired in the same division as each other, Latics winning the home fixture 3:2 in April 98 having lost the away game at Vicarage Road in November 97, 2:1.

We have never won at Vicarage Road, losing 5 of the 8 games we have played there.

Classic Encounter

21 February 2007 – Watford 1:1 Latics

It’s difficult to find a classic encounter away at Watford, we have only picked up 3 points in total there, but one of those draws was a real battling performance back in our Premier League days.

Fitz Hall was red carded by referee Rob Styles on 20 minutes for a two-footed challenge where he clearly won the ball, Watford took the lead 4 minutes later when Henderson stabbed home following a goalmouth scramble.

Latics fought to get back in the game with both Landzaat and Folan going close, then with half-time fast approaching Folan pounced to prod home from close range. With more chances Paul Jewell’s side could have taken all the points but settled for a deserved point with a battling display from the 10-men.

Latics – Filan, Boyce, Jackson, Hall, Baines, Taylor, Landzaat, Skoko, McCulloch, Folan (Kilbane 55), Heskey

Unused Subs – Nash, Camara, Valencia, Unsworth

Goals – Darius Henderson (24) – Caleb Folan (40)

Any Previous? Latics v Coventry

Latics and Coventry City have met just 9 times down the years, it’s very close at the moment, we have 4 wins to the Sky Blues 3.

The replay at Springfield Park attracted the BBC Match of the Day cameras with the prospect of an upset on the cards.

The Latics set about the Coventry, Don Page missed a glorious chance but the game was settled by Micky Gynn scoring the only goal. A bumper crowd though for us with 7,429 spectators in attendance.

Our last meeting with Coventry was on the 8th November, a 2:0 defeat at the CBS Stadium.
