Meet The Ref - Latics v Luton FA Cup Replay

Latics are back at the DW Stadium on Tuesday for an FA Cup 3rd round replay against Luton Town, the referee for the game will be Manchester official, Matt Donohue.

Matt Donohue

The former Denton PE Teacher was appointed to the National List of EFL referees at the start of the 2018/19 season and subsequently to the Select Group 2 of Ref’s the following summer, obviously a high flyer.

In his career in the EFL, Matt Donohue has taken charge of 150 games, issued 521 yellow and 29 red cards, pointing to the penalty spot on 28 occasions.

Previous Games

Donohue has taken charge of five Latics’ games previously, all in the Championship, his last Latics game was our draw away at Norwich at the start of this season.

Donohue’s last refereed Luton on New Years Day, their 1:2 away win at Huddersfield.

So far this season Matt Donohue has refereed 19 games, of which 16 have come in the Championship.

Any Previous? Cardiff City v Latics

Latics and Cardiff City have met on 29 occasions down the years.

The first meeting came in Division 3, during the 1982/83 season, we travelled down to Ninian Park on the 11 September ’82 losing 3:2. We drew the return fixture 0:0 at Springfield Park in April 83.

Of the 15 games between the two sides played in Cardiff, we have won 4 and drawn 7, only tasting defeat on 4 occasions, in fact only losing 1 of the last 10 games played away would suggest that it is a trip that we enjoy making.

Our last meeting came in the Championship in October 2022, a 1:3 defeat at the DW Stadium.

Classic Encounter

FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic travelled to Premier League club Cardiff City in the 5th round of the competition and came away with a 1:2 victory, setting up a 6th round tie at Manchester City.

All the goals coming in the first half, Chris McCann and Ben Watson for the Latics, Fraizer Campbell replying  Cardiff.

Latics – Al Habsi, Perch, Ramis, Boyce, Beausejour, McCann, Watson (McEachean 58), Espinoza, McManaman (McClean 67), Gomez (Crainey 78),Fortune

Cardiff City Current Form

The Bluebirds currently sit 20th in the Championship table with 28 points from 26 games, 7 wins, 7 draws and 12 defeats, they have scored 20 goals and conceded 29.

Without a win in their last 7 games, Cardiff’s current form is: LDDDDL

Cardiff Home Form

Cardiff’s 13 Championship home games so far this season have brought 16 points, 4 wins, 4 draws and 5 defeats, not very prolific at home, there is only Preston, with 8, who have scored less goals on their own patch than Cardiff’s tally of 10.

Cardiff City last won at home on the 29th of October when they beat Rotherham 1:0.

Player To Watch - Callum Robinson

Callum Robinson

27 year old striker, came through the ranks at Aston Villa but made his name at Preston, signed on a season long loan from West Brom in the summer.

A lively forward and very much a team player, 5 assists and 4 goals, including one at the DW Stadium back in October.

Meet The Ref - Cardiff City v Latics

Latics are back in Championship action on Saturday, a trip down to South Wales to face Cardiff City, the referee for the game will be Carnforth official, Jeremy Simpson.

Jeremy Simpson

A former Premier League and FIFA International assistant referee, Simpson is part of the ‘Select Group 2’ of professional ref’s after rising rapidly through the refereeing ranks, he was at Conference level in 2012 and found his feet in the Championship in the 2015/16 campaign when of the 35 games he took charge of over the season 15 were at 2nd tier level.

 Previous Games

Jeremy Simpson’s first Latics game came in the Championship, back in August 2016, a 1:1 draw at the DW Stadium against Birmingham City, Craig Davies scoring a 90th minute equaliser.

47 year old Simpson has previously taken charge of 15 Latics games, 7 of those games have been away from the DW Stadium, of which we’ve won one and lost four. In fact we have only won four games in which Jezza has been in charge, not the best of records.

The last time Jeremy Simpson was officiating in a Wigan Athletic fixture was the 1-2 away win at Huddersfield earlier this season, Shinnie and Lang ending up with yellows

Jeremy Simpson last refereed Cardiff in their 2:0 away defeat at Millwall back in September.

15 games so far for Jeremy Simpson this season, 13 of which have been in the Championship.
