The old saying goes, you’re only as good as your last result. There’s no denying that this is a massive game for many reasons but the league is the priority, the return of Paul Cook is no doubt going to take centre stage. Hopefully it can spur the lads on to victory.
Previous
The last meeting was the opening weekend of the season when a new look Latics side traveled to Portman Road under John Sheridan and were beaten in front of the sky cameras by 2 goals to nil. A quick free kick was headed home after 11 minutes by Teddy Bishop but that didn’t deter the Latics. Obi had two glorious chances to bring the sides level and if it wasn’t for the crossbar, Joe Garner would have succeeded where Obi had failed. However, Ipswich made the Latics rue their missed opportunities when Edwards scored after 80 minutes to secure all 3 points. Out of the team that started that game, only 3 started our last match. 4 have left the club and that includes Naismith, Roberts and Garner.
The Latics last beat Ipswich back in 2014, a 1-3 win at Portman Road. A James McClean brace and Leon Barnett gal was enough to see the Latics continue a push for the play offs. Possibly the most memorable defeat for Latics fans would be the 2-1 defeat at Portman Road when a young Leighton Baines scored an absolute world class goal from around 40 yards out.
Ones to Watch
Norwood - He is pivotal to the team performing. Without him they have nothing up top and that comes from Benjamin Bloom, our studio guest.
Young - A perfect full back likened to Byrne, Robinson or James and fits the bill quite well. Back in the team last time out and could prove to be a vital player on Saturday.
Form - Won 2, Drawn 1, Lost 3
Portsmouth 2-1 Ipswich
Fleetwood 2-0 Ipswich
Ipswich 1-0 Plymouth
Ipswich 1-1 Lincoln
Gillingham 3-1 Ipswich
Accrington 1-2 Ipswich
It was thought that Paul Lambert was the problem, however it seems the players need to shape up. Things haven’t started well for Paul Cook but he and Gary Roberts will know how to get the best out of the side and push for promotion, albeit maybe next season.
Former Latics - Gary Roberts and Paul Cook make up the management team. Every Latics fan will want to wish them the best of luck, after 5pm on Saturday. Emyr Huws also plays for them.
Missing Personnel
Massey, Solomon-Otobar are injury concerns and Curtis Tilt is away on international duty. Not what the Latics need at this time in the season.
Opposition Fan
Benjamin Bloom joined us in the studio and is hopeful that things will pick up under Cook. You can hear him on the podcast, link below.
Prediction - PWU 2-2 Ipswich - Ipswich by one.
