Latics and Charlton have only met on 13 previous occasions, with results spread evenly between the two clubs, five wins each.
It is a relatively new history that we share with our South London friends, the first meeting coming as recently as August 2005 when we met at the Valley in the 2nd game of our inaugural Premier League season. That ended 1-0 in favour of the Addicks, Darren Bent scoring the only goal of the game shortly before half-time.
We gained a little revenge in the reverse fixture in December 2005, following three extremely tough away games at Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, we lost the lot, the Latics dusted themselves down and turned in a scintillating performance with Henri Camara grabbing our first Premier League hat-trick.
Of the six games played between the clubs at the DW Stadium, Latics have won four and drawn once, the only defeat was a 0:3 thumping in February 2015 when we were suffering under Malky Mackay and sitting 23rd in the table steaming rolling our way to relegation.
Memorable Game – Latics 2:1 Charlton
1st February 2014, we were in the middle of an incredible run under Uwe Rosler, 23 game games with just two defeats, 16 of those 23 coming as wins, to say we were flying was an understatement, Charlton by contrast were struggling down in 22nd position and only one league win in 12 games, but on the day looked anything like strugglers as they took a 3rd minute lead through Marvin Sordell, attacked throughout the game hit the woodwork and got amongst us.
Back then though we had some real quality in the side, Ben Watson, Jordi Gomez, Boycey, Jean Beausejour, James McArthur, James McClean and of course Marc Antoine Fortune.
We left it late, really late, but Fortune in the 88th minute and a Gomez free kick on 90 minutes completed the turnaround in what was a breathtaking game.
