Any Previous? Crewe v Latics

Latics travel down the M6 to Crewe this evening as they take on the Alex in the Papa John Pizza Trophy.

 

The two clubs have met on 34 occasions down the years, with three of the last four meetings coming at Gresty Road.

 

Our last meeting was back in April, we got a great win which went a long way to securing our status in League 1 for this campaign, Joe Dodoo and a Lee Evans penalty sealing a 2:0 victory for the Latics.

 

A stand out game against the Alex in recent times was almost six years ago to the day, 6^th October 2015, a Tuesday night Johnstones Paint Trophy trip 40 miles down the M6, isn’t something that usually whets the appetite nor serves up a feast, but this game was a little different.

 

Latics team for this game was Jussi Jaaskelainen in goal, Donervon Daniels, Jack Hendry, Leon Barnett and Andy Kellett made up the defence, Chris McCann, Max Power and Francisco Junior sorted out the middle of the park, whilst up front we had Jordy Hiwula alongside Samni Odelusi and making his debut and being introduced to the Latics fans a certain loanee from Middlesbrough, the one, the only Yanic Wildschut.

 

Odelusi had a penalty saved in the opening minutes of the game before a defensive slip allowed Crewe in and Haber put the Railwaymen a goal up on 6 mins, 4 minutes later and Hiwula equalised for the Latics following a corner and a bit of head tennis, only for Ryan Colclough to restore Crewe’s lead on 36 minutes beating Jussi at his near post, whatever happened to Colclough?

 

Anyway Hiwula grabbed his second of the game on 70 minutes with a neat finish to put the Latics level once again, then six minutes later Yanic showed what he was all about with a blistering run from inside his own half before unleashing an absolute thunderbolt into the top corner from 20 yards out.

 

Great stuff, here’s hoping for a similar entertaining game tonight.
