Down the years we have met Sunderland on 23 occasions, the majority of those games, 14, have come in the Premier League, but our first meeting with the Mackems came in Division 3, in the 1987/88 season, a 4:2 defeat away at Roker Park in October 87 was followed by the infamous ‘mud slide’ game at Springfield Park in March 1988 which ended 2:2.
Last season we managed to do the double over the Mackems, a very creditable away win at the Stadium of Light in December, Kyle Joseph striking in the 16th minute with our only shot of the game, an excellent backs to the wall performance ensured the three points and a clean sheet came back to Wigan.
Back in April we secured the points at the DW Stadium with goals from Will Keane (42) and Callum Lang (58) after Charlie Wyke had given the visitors a 32nd minute lead.
