Latics and Rotherham United have met 40 times down the years, the first of which came way back in the 1935/36 season when we met in an FA Cup 1st round tie at Springfield Park.
The tie ended in a 2:1 defeat for the Latics, prolific striker Teddy Felton grabbing our consolation goal, later that season Felton was signed by First Division giants Huddersfield Town having scored 75 goals in 113 appearances for the Latics in just short of three seasons.
It would be 48 years before the two clubs would meet again, this time a Division 3 encounter, New Years Eve, 1983 once again at Springfield Park, this time the score line was reversed as the Latics ran out 2:1 winners.
Our last meeting was a Championship game which ended in 1-1 draw at the New York Stadium, back in February 2019, both goals coming in the first half, Josh Windass equalising Robertson’s opener.
Stand Out Game
Who could forget Nick Powell’s antics in our 3:2 win at the DW back in 2018. Rotherham took the lead twice in this relegation dog fight, only for firstly Gabriel Obertan, then Alex Gilbey to level matters for the Latics, before Powell came off the bench, following a two month injury lay-off, to do what Nick Powell does best.
In the 97th minute of the game he grabbed a piggy back ride off the Rotherham goalkeeper Price, won a free kick, got the keeper booked, then smashed home the subsequent free kick to give the Latics the three points.
Special mention to PWU’s very own Paul Thorp who can be seen charging down the steps of the East Stand following Powell’s winner, on the video below.
