Latics and Wycombe Wanderers have met lust 16 times down the years, the first of which came in the 1993/94 season.
A crowd of just 2,388 watched us play out a 1:1 draw in August ’93 at Springfield Park, this was followed up later in the season with a 0:1 away win on a cold February day at Adams Park, Wycombe at the time were flying at the top of the Division under Martin O’Neill, whilst Latics were fighting for Football League survival with Kenny Swain in charge.
Stand Out Game Latics 5:2 Wycombe
9th August 1997, Champions of League Division 3 Wigan Athletic face Wycombe Wanderers at Springfield Park, in the opening game of the new season. Latics had made quite a few signings during the close season, notably Brendan O’Connell from Charlton Athletic and Scott Green and David Lee from Bolton.
The game was played in a heatwave in front of 4,706 supporters, the Latics got off to a blistering start to the game racing into a four goal first half lead, Brendan O’Connell (2), Scott Green and Ian Kilford scoring for the home side.
The second period was a little more subdued, but there were another three goals, Keith Scott with two for Wycombe before O’Connell grabbed his hat-trick and Latics fifth in the final minute of the game.
