Latics and Bolton have met 47 times down the years, the first of which came on Boxing Day 1983 in a League Division 3 encounter in front of a 10,045 capacity crowd at Springfield Park.
We lost that game 0:1, but we did win the following two encounters in the league, by the same score line, 1:0.
Always a tight game? Well it would appear so, out of the 47 meetings, 34 have ended either in a draw or been won by a one goal margin.
League Cup
The two clubs have met twice in the League Cup, with the Latics progressing on both occasions, in 1987 we met in a two legged 1st round tie, a crowd of 4,115 witnessed the Latics lose the first leg at Springfield Park, 2:3, a David Hamilton penalty and a Bobby Campbell special the scorers on the night.
A week later we travelled to Burnden Park and despite being a goal down at half time, Latics fought back in the second half to beat Bolton 1:3, courtesy of a Campbell hat-trick and progress through to the 2nd round with a 5:4 aggregate score.
In the 2005/06 season we met Bolton in the ¼ final of the competition at the DW Stadium, Jason Roberts scoring both our goals in front of 13,401 as the Latics moved comfortably through to the semi final.
Stand Out Game Bolton 1:3 Latics
Brilliant bit of commentary by Dave Swanton at the end – “What a poor referee, what a diabolic referee, what a pig of a referee”
Don’t you just love it.
