Any Previous? Huddersfield v Latics

Latics and Huddersfield Town have met 32 times down the years, the Terriers having slightly the better of things with 14 wins to our 10.

The first meeting between the two clubs came on the 24th November 1973, a 1st round FA Cup tie played at Leeds Road, with Huddersfield winning the game 2:0.

We met in the 4th Division in our inaugural season in the Football League, a goalless draw at Leeds Road in October was followed up by a 2:1 Latics win in the return fixture at Springfield Park on the 17th February 1979, Noel Ward with both the Latics goals and Ian Robins with the consolation for Huddersfield, Robins, who had a newsagent shop on Woodhouse Lane, went on to play in the Wigan Amateur League for Bethel when he hung his pro boots up.

Classic Encounters

There have been some standout meetings down the years at Huddersfield, two that spring immediately to mind are the goalless draw on the 19th April 2003, that point guaranteed promotion to the 2nd tier in English Football for the first time in our history.

Also, who can forget the 5th round FA Cup tie on the way to us winning the trophy in 2013. Arouna Kone with a double and a goal apiece for Callum McManaman and James McArthur set up the ¼ final tie away at Everton.

But the game that I am plumping for was the first game back following the cancelation of football due to covid. Prior to the lockdown we had started to pick up some decent results and actually managed to pull ourselves out of the bottom three, what we wanted to know when football was resumed, could we keep the upsurge in form going, the answer was an emphatic yes.

The first game back came on the 20th June and goals from Jamal Lowe (26) and Anthony Pilkington (48) sealed the win and the three points
