Ref Change - Doncaster Rovers v Latics

History won’t be made after all following the news that Rebecca Welch will not be taking charge of our game at Doncaster tomorrow, Swindon born, Cambridgeshire based official Alan Young has been drafted in as Rebecca’s replacement.

Alan Young

This will be the second time Young has been in charge of a Latics game, the other one? Well, that would be our 1:4 win at the Keepmoat Stadium in April 2021, Jamie Jones and Joe Dodoo both finding their way into the book with a yellow apiece.

Alan Young was appointed to the National List as recently as the 2018/19 season, his first game was Crewe Alex 6:0 Morecambe and he has gone on to ref 107 games in the following three and a bit seasons.

You could say Young is a little card happy, in those 107 games he has issued 477 yellow cards, an average of nearly 5 per game and not had a single no card game, in fact he has only had one game where he has issued just one card. His average so far this season is 4.6 per game.

As mentioned above this game will be Alan Young’s second involvement in a Latics fixture, he has previously ref’d Donny on six occasions, the last being our meeting last season, which true to form produced five yellow cards.

Earlier this campaign Young took charge of the FA Cup tie between Stevenage Borough and MK Dons, a game which had 8 (eight) yellow cards and 2 reds.

Away from refereeing Alan Young is still involved in football, his full time job is CEO/Director of Bedfordshire FA, he’s been in the position for the past ten years.

Jack Whatmough Interview

Wigan Athletic number 5, Jack Whatmough joins us for a chat.
Jack lifts the lid on why he came to the Latics in the summer, which player from the current squad he feels will go all the way to the top and why, in his opinion, pineapple should never go on a pizza.

The summer recruit has started every League 1 game so far this season, his performances have been excellent every time he's taken to the pitch, a great reader of the game, Jack looks every bit a touch of class at the back for the Latics.
