Any Previous? - Oldham v Latics

Off to Boundary Park in the Papa John’s sponsored EFL Trophy on Tuesday, to face Lancashire neighbours Oldham Athletic, a fixture that, surprisingly, has only occurred 18 times previously. Time to grab a 'Pizza The Action'*

 

The first meeting between the two clubs came in the 1997/98 season, the 4^th November, newly promoted Latics facing Oldham in the third tier of English football, we took a heavy defeat away at Boundary Park, 3:1 with David Lowe on the score sheet for the Latics.

 

We did gain revenge at Springfield Park in March in the return fixture, Ian Kilford scoring the only goal of the game and securing the points.

 

The last time we met was in the 2017/18 season, we did the double that campaign, winning 0-2 away and 3-0 at the DW Stadium.

 

The two clubs have also met in the EFL Trophy competition once before, 9 Jan 2001 winning 2-3 at Boundary Park in what was then known as the LDV Vans trophy.

 

A quite unfamiliar Latics line-up and goal scorers that evening, Brian McLaughlin with the opener for the Latics and two from Alan McLaughlin, the winner was a 95^th minute Golden Goal! The crowd was quite healthy for this competition, 2,551 and the referee a certain Mt Phil Dowd.

Stand Out Game

9^th October 1998, the two Latics’ meet for only the 3^rd time and produce an absolute classic, goals from Carl Bradshaw, Stuart Barlow and Paul Warne, plus an outstanding performance by stand-in keeper Eric Nixon saw us come out on top of a pulsating encounter at Ice Station Zebra.
