Latics are back at the DW Stadium on Saturday for a League One fixture against strugglers Gillingham, in charge of the game will be East Yorkshire official, the vastly experienced, Carl Boyeson.

Boyeson began refereeing at the age of 22 in the Hull Sunday League, when his best mate gave him some sound advice, Boyeson says - ‘He told me that I was never going to be a pro footballer so why not referee pro football instead.
“So that’s what I set out to do. I’ve been on the National List of referees since 2002 .”
Having been on the Football League list for the past two decades, Boyeson recently completed a milestone in his refereeing career, having officiated in over 500 EFL games, speaking about this achievement he commented – “Looking back it seems unreal that I have covered this amount of EFL games as a Referee and I'm going into my 18th season in the middle.
“Obviously, I am proud to have reached this milestone and now I will push on to 550 games and beyond. In total I have covered 567 games including FA Cup, EFL Cup and EFL Trophy, also not forgetting I was an Assistant Referee for 6 years on both The EFL and FA Premier League and these games are not included in these totals.”
Carl Boyeson’s first Latics game was in League Division 1 – now the Championship - back in 2003, our first ever season at that level, it came against Nottingham Forest at the DW Stadium and we drew 2:2.
Boyeson has refereed Latics games on another seven occasions since and we have yet to lose a match he has been in charge of. The draw against Forest was followed by another, this time Doncaster in 2013, the next six were all wins, including Donny twice more, the last time being last season, our 1:0 home win in October 2020.
Lucky ref? Is there such a thing, let’s hope so.
Carl Boyeson has been in charge of Gillingham games on 13 occassions, each one has been away from the Priestfield. He last refereed the Gills away at Burton earlier this season, they drew 1:1.
