Meet The Ref - Morecambe v Latics

Latics are back on the road this Tuesday with a trip up the M6 to face Morecambe in a rearranged fixture, West Riding referee, Sam Barrott will take charge of this game.

Sam Barrott

This is Barrott’s second season on the National List of referees having been promoted from the National League for the start of the last campaign.

He’s taken charge of three games involving the Latics two coming last season, our Football League Trophy defeat 1:3 to Port Vale at the DW Stadium in October and our epic away win at Burton Albion in late December when a Kyle Joseph hat-trick and a Will Keane goal saw us take the three points in a pulsating game that finished 3:4. Barrott didn’t produce a single card in either game.

Barrott also took charge of our home game with Sheffield Wednesday in September, we lost that one and had both Tendayi Darikwa and Jack Whatmough booked.

This will be the Yorkshireman’s first Morecambe game this season, but he was in charge of the Shrimp’s home defeat by Rochdale in the EFL Trophy in September 2020.

Barrott became a referee due to an injury playing football for Halifax Town Youth Team, his injury left him unable to do contact sport for 9 months. His granddad advised him to take the referee’s course whilst he was out injured and the rest, as they say, is history.

He cites both Bobby and Andy Madley as his role models.

Last Game Barrott was in charge of the Stoke City 2:0 Orient FA Cup 3rd round tie on the 9th January, issuing 2 yellows one to each side.

Another away day, another victory, Saturday at Doncaster ticked all the boxes, we even witnessed an Omar Bogle goal.

Jack Whatmough & Kell Watts were outstanding for the Latics, Max Power and Will Keane on the score sheet, 3 points coming back home with us.

We play Morecambe on Tuesday in a competitive game for the first time since 1978, we had some great tussles in our non-league days and it will be nice to renew acquaintances
