Meet The Ref - Sunderland v Latics

Latics are off up to the Stadium of Light on Saturday for a League 1 encounter with Sunderland, for the first time in what feels an age, we have a referee in charge with a bit of mileage on the clock, Rutland based Trevor Kettle.

Trevor Kettle

In his 18th season as a referee, Kettle’s whistle never seems to run out of steam, controversy follows him around and a quick google search under his name will testify to this.

In his 18 seasons, Kettle has only officiated two Latics games, both at home, both in the same season, 2017/18 League 1, his first was a goalless draw against Charlton Athletic, the second was our 1:0 win against Oxford United, ironically enough both Charlton and Oxford were managed by Karl Robinson at the time they played us.

The Oxford game did have a quirky moment which became a focus of attention from the national media, the Latics kicked off the second half with no opposition players on the pitch, a rundown of what happened, if you are interested, can be found by clicking here.

Kettle is former Royal Air Force and has worked at NATO, presently he is employed as Sales Director of an engineering company.

Trevor Kettle's last game this campaign was a League 2 affair on Tuesday the 24 November at St James' Park , Exeter City 6:1 Colchester United, he booked two players, both from Colchester.
