Latics travel down to play Birmingham City on Saturday in a Championship fixture at St Andrews, chosen to referee the match is Hampshire official, Andy Davies.
Davies is a very rare breed in the referee circles having been a professional football player for Gillingham, Portsmouth and Yeovil, before injury forced him to retire at the tender age of 28.
Not one to feel sorry for himself, Andy immediately through himself into becoming a ref and he graduated rapidly onto the National List in 2012 and two years later he was taking charge of Championship games.
Since becoming an EFL referee Andy
Davies has taken charge of 319 games, issued 1072 yellow and 53 red cards,
pointing to the penalty spot on 89 occasions.
Previous Games
This will be Andy Davies’ eleventh Latics game, his first was our Championship 2:2 draw against Wolves at Molineux in the 2014/15 season, our home 1:1 draw with West Brom in December 2019 was his last, in that game he awarded West Brom an indirect free kick 8 yards from our goal after Jamie Jones picked up the ball following a back pass by Kal Naismith. West Brom scored and the rest, as they say, is history.
Andy Davies’ most recent Birmingham City game came last season, a 1:2 home defeat to Blackburn in May. Davies booked just the one Blackburn player.
