Any Previous? - Birmingham City v Latics

Latics and Birmingham City have met 25 times down the years, with us just having the better of things with 9 wins and 9 draws, 3 of those wins coming at St Andrews.

The first time we met Birmingham City was an FA Cup 3rd round tie, played on the 7th January 1978. Northern Premier League, Latics taking on a top flight side managed by World Cup winning manager, Sir Alf Ramsey.

Latics put up a spirited performance but goals from Trevor Francis (2) and Keith Bertschin (2) gave the home side a flattering scoreline of 4:0

The last meeting also came at St Andrews, New Years Day 2020, this time the Latics came away with the win, 2:3, courtesy of two Josh Wandass goals and a Cedric Kipre effort.

Latics – Jones; Byrne, Kipre, Naismith (Dunkley), Robinson; Morsy, Williams, Evans; Jacobs, Lowe (Roberts); Windass

Last season, Birmingham City’s 23 home games brought 27 points from 7 wins, 6 draws and 10 defeats, this season’s 2 home games have brought a win and a draw.

Player To Watch – Scott Hogan

Scott Hogan

The Irlam born striker exploded into League Football at Rochdale before moving onto Brentford and Aston Villa. Of his 244 games so far 200 have come in the Championship.

A physical striker initially signing on loan in January 2020, Scott Hogan has been a consistent performer for Birmingham City, he made his loan move a permanent one in September 2020 signing a four year deal with the Blues.

The 30 year old had a good campaign last season, scoring 10 goals and making 1 assists, those 10 goals came from just 46 attempts and Hogan has started the new season off with 1 goal from 2 attempts and 1 assist so far.

Looking forward to the Birmingham game at the weekend, trips to St Andrews always throw back to that FA Cup tie in 1978, Sir Alf Ramsey the Birmingham manager was impressed so much by the professionalism of the Latics that he actually canvased on our behalf at the Football League AGM, resulting in us gaining admission and becoming the first Northern club to be elected to the Football League since Workington in 1951.

We are joined by EFL pundit and Birmingham fan, Gab Sutton, who gives us the lowdown on everything we need to know about Saturday's opponents.

Up the tics!
