Meet The Ref - Latics v Sutton United

A trip to Wembley is the prize awaiting the winners of Tuesday night’s game at the DW Stadium as the Latics take on League Two promotion chasers, Sutton United in the Papa John’s Pizza Trophy aka the EFL Trophy, the referee for the game will be Sheffield based official, James Bell.

James Bell

Bell is in his second season on the National List of referees and he is a highly rated young official with a bright future. He has already clocked up 65 games in his two seasons and a record of 212 yellows and 6 reds suggests that he doesn’t stand for any nonsense.

James Bell has refereed the Latics twice previously, our home goalless draw with Bristol Rovers last season and our 2:3 away win at Oxford back in December.

Bell has also ref’d Sutton twice, both those games coming this season and both against Forest Green Rovers in League Two, 2:1 away defeat on the opening day of the campaign and a 1:1 draw last month at Gander Green Lane.

James Bell’s 34 games so far this campaign, 13 have come in League One, 12 in League Two, 4 in both the FA Cup & the EFL Trophy and 2 in the EFL Cup. Bell’s last game came in League Two on Saturday 5 March, Crawley 0:0 Scunthorpe United, booking a player off each side.

Three points in the bag is what matters, perhaps not free flowing football, but the result was that we kept a clean sheet, never looked in danger of anything other than a win and maintained our place in the automatic promotion spots and we've still got games in hand.

We have had a good few weeks despite the two losses to Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland, we've set the pace and the pressure i on those trying to catch us.

We have a break from League One action on Tuesday when Sutton United visit the DW Stadium in the Papa John Trophy semi-final, with a trip to Wembley at stake, this is a game that both clubs would love to win.

Of course we have tasted success in this competition on two previous occasions and the final is great for the club and supporters to experience.

We have Mike from Sutton United Talk Time joining us for a lowdown on the League Two club, it's a competition that Sutton have enjoyed this season and they are relishing the possibility of a trip to Wembley and a tough game will undoubtedly be in store.

We will have some 'big guns' available for selection with Tendayi Darikwa, Graeme Shinnie and James McClean all serving suspensions from League One games, this match gives them an opportunity to keep ticking over and I wouldn't be surprised if all three featured.

Tuesday is a night that I am looking forward to and the excitement is building.

Up the tics!
