Latics nip down the M6 on Tuesday to take on Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road, the referee for the game is scheduled to be Blackburn based official, Ben Toner.
Ben Toner |
Following three seasons at National League level, Toner was promoted to the National List of Ref’s in the summer of 2015 and began refereeing Football League games that coming season, his debut was the AFC Wimbledon v Plymouth League Two game on the 8th August 2015, a two-nil away win for Argyle and just the one yellow card.
In his seven seasons on the National List, Ben Toner has taken charge of 222 games, issued 704 yellow cards, 33 reds and awarded 52 penalties.
Ben Toner has refereed the Latics on four occasions previously, including our EFL Trophy quarter-final tie against Arsenal in January this season with Chris Sze and James Carragher picking up a booking apiece.
The other games came in League One, Curtis Tilt being the only Wigan Athletic player to pick up a card from those three games, away at Accy last season.
Toner last refereed Crewe on the opening game of this campaign, a 2:2 draw with Cheltenham Town at Gresty Road.
Of Toner’s 25 games this season 9 have come in League One, 9 in League Two, 5 in the EFL Trophy, 1 in the FA Cup and 1 in the EFL Cup.
Ben Toner’s last game was Saturday, 12 March, the League Two game, Stevenage Borough 0:2 Newport County, just one booking Newport defender, Ryan Haynes.

MK Dons didn't live up to expectations, I thought we were in line for a tough game against the Barcelona of League One, turned out that we were quite comfortable in containing them and should have come back with all the points. Darling scoring late on with a header from a third corner in succession, a crowded six yard box and a good inswinging delivery from Twine just needed a head on it and that's what happened.
The draw was no good for MK Dons and their players reaction at the final whistle told you all you needed to know, they were very disappointed, it may have been a share of the spoils on the day but we certainly got the psychological victory.
Crewe on Tuesday for the Latics and an excellent opportunity to put a gap on the chasing pack, no disrespect to the Alex but this is a game that we should be looking to bring home all the points. Darikwa and Shinnie will be available for selection following their suspensions but McClean and Lang will be missing due to theirs.
Up the tics!
