The two clubs have met on 36 occasions down the years, with the Latics having the better of those meetings by 18 to 12.
The first meeting between the two clubs came on Boxing Day 1978, a 1:0 win at Springfield Park with Peter Houghton scoring in front of 7,586.
Last Season
We lost 3:0 at Gresty Road in October 2020, Crewe giving us the run around in that particular game, but we got revenge in April with a win which went a long way to securing our status in League One, Joe Dodoo and a Lee Evans penalty sealing a 2:0 victory for the Latics.
Stand Out Game
12th February 2005, the last time we won a league game at Gresty Road.
A Jason Roberts (3 & 76) double and a Nathan Ellington penalty (68) following a foul on Gary Teale, secured the points and consolidated 2nd spot in the Championship for Paul Jewell’s Premiership bound side.
Crewe had equalised through an Andy White effort on the stroke of half time, but the Latics were just too strong for a spirited Alex side.
Latics – Filan; Eaden, Thome, Breckin, Baines; Teale, Mahon,
Bullard, McCulloch; Ellington, Roberts.
Subs - Jackson, Jarrett, Graham,
Johansson, Walsh.
Att: 7,981
Our last league meeting was on the 15th February this year, Latics winning the reverse fixture at the DW Stadium by a 2:0 score line, James McClean and Callum Lang grabbing the goals.
Highlights – Latics 2:0 Crewe Alexandra
Crewe Alexandra Current Form
Crewe currently sit 24th in League One with 25 points from 37 games, their recent form is, LWLLL.
Currently on a run of 11 league games with just one win and nine defeats, 2022 has been a nightmare year so far for the Railwaymen, it has brought just seven points from a possible forty-two, fourteen league games with just two wins and one draw, 9 scored and a very disappointing 29 conceded.
Their last game was on Saturday away at Sunderland where they lost 2:0, with both goals coming in the final 6 minutes of the game.
Home Form
Crewe’s 18 home games so far this season have brought 16 points, with four wins, ten defeats & four draws, scoring 17 goals and conceding 32. The worst home form in League One.
Player To Watch – Luke Offord
Luke Offord |
The 22 year old defender who came through the Crewe academy, made his debut just 7 weeks after his 20th birthday in a home League Two game against Leyton Orient in January 2020. Offord scored his first goal the following season, ironically against the Latics, in a 3:0 home win.
Though only 5’ 7, Offord plays as a centre back or the right sided defender as part of a back three.
So far this season, Luke Offord has made 35 appearances for Crewe. Not afraid to put his foot in, the young defender has made 42 successful tackles, been penalised for committing 26 fouls and picked up 11 yellow cards which included a sending off for two yellows in a 0:1 home defeat to Accrington back in August. He’s also been unfortunate to score an own goal in Crewe’s 2:1 away defeat to Ipswich.
Offord is a highly rated young defender, good on the ball and quick around the pitch, he missed a large chunk of last season due to a serious hamstring injury but recovered well over the summer and - along with Tom Lowry - he has been Crewe’s shinning light in a very dark season.
