Sunderland are in town Tuesday evening, as the Latics look to build on a fantastic win away at Doncaster, in the fight against relegation from League 1.
Down the years we have met Sunderland on 22 occasions, the majority of those games, 14, have come in the Premier League, but our first meeting with the Mackems came in Division 3, in the 1987/88 seasons, a 4:2 defeat away at Roker Park in October 87 was followed by the infamous ‘mud slide’ game at Springfield Park in March 1988.
The fixture finished 2:2, both clubs taking a share of the spoils but the most memorable feature of this meeting came off the field of play.
6,949 spectators poured into Springfield Park on a truly dreadful day, the grassy bank on the away end was more like a ski slope and that is where the real entertainment took place.
Sunderland supporters took it in turn to slide down the infamous away end at the Latics, there were forward rolls, somersaults and dives, both sets of fans gave loud cheers and applause, as one by one we were treated to some top class tumbling. Luckily it had been recorded and preserved for prosperity.
Earlier this campaign we got a very creditable away win at the Stadium of Light, Kyle Joseph striking in the 16th minute with our only shot of the game, an excellent backs to the wall performance ensured the three points and a clean sheet came back to Wigan.
