Looking ahead to Easter Monday’s League 1 clash between the Latics and Portsmouth, we have met 20 times down the years, Pompey have had the better of things so far.
Our first meeting came in our first season as a Football League club, 1978/79, we lost the away game at Fratton Park in September, by one goal to nil, a very healthy 4th Division crowd of 13,958 saw the game.
The return fixture took place on a cold February afternoon at Springfield Park, 8,289 spectators turned up to watch the Latics win the game 2:0.
We have the opportunity of doing the double over Portsmouth having won the reverse fixture 1:2 earlier this campaign, worth watching the highlights for Tom James’ free kick.
The double is a feat we have only ever completed once over Pompey, that was in the Premier League in the 2008/09 season, winning the away fixture 1:2 with goals from Amr Zaki and Emile Heskey, then finishing off the season with a 1:0 victory at home courtesy of a Hugo Rodallega effort.
Standout Game – 26 August 2017 – Latics 1:1 Portsmouth
An Ivan Toney 8th minute goal, a red card for Chey Dunkley on 59 minutes and a headed equaliser from the smallest man in football, Conor Chaplin 15 minutes from time. All in front of 9,685 fans at the DW.
