Meet The Ref - Stevenage FC v Latics

Latics travel down to Hertfordshire on Saturday to face Stevenage, the first time the two clubs have met. For this League One history making fixture, Swindon born, Cambridgeshire based official, Alan Young will be the referee.

Alan Young

Alan Young was appointed to the National List at the beginning of the 2018/19 season, he has gone on to ref 131 games since, issuing 655 yellow cards and 23 reds and awarding 26 penalties.

You could say Young is a little card happy, currently averaging 5 yellows per game and in his six seasons on the National List he’s not had a single no card game, in fact he has only had one game where he has issued just one card. His average so far this season is 6 yellows per game.

Previous Games

This will be the third time Young has been in charge of a Latics game, the two previous were both away fixtures at Doncaster, our 1:4 win April 2021, Jamie Jones and Joe Dodoo both finding their way into the book with a yellow apiece and our 1:2 win at the Keepmoat in January 2022, Ben Amos picking up a yellow that day.

Alan Young has previously ref’d Stevenage on seven occasions, the last one coming last season, their 1:0 home win over Crewe in March. Young does have a bit of card form with Stevenage, taking charge of their FA Cup tie against MK Dons in 2021 he produced 8 (eight) yellow cards and 2 reds.

Away from refereeing Alan Young is still involved in football, his full time job is CEO/Director of Bedfordshire FA, he’s been in the position for the past ten years.
