This will be Smith’s 2nd Latics game of his career, having taken charge of our home game with Northampton last season, which we lost 2:3 and had Tom Pearce, Oliver Crankshaw and Joe Garner booked.

The 28 year old is in third year in the Football League and his first in the Select Group 2 of officials, he’s ref’d the Robins on one occasion also, their 0:1 away win at Exeter in March this year on their way to winning the League 2 title.

Smith is a PE and Maths teacher by day and works at a school in Barnet.

Hailing from Bourne in Lincolnshire, Smith had a serious problem with a shoulder injury, which he had to have pinned to stop it from dislocating, he has overcome this and is now living his dream.

Smith says - “I’m thrilled to get on the Football League list so soon.

“I love the job

“When you start refereeing you automatically have an ambition to get to Football League level, but you don’t expect it to happen.”
