Down the years we have met Sunderland on 24 occasions, the majority of those games, 14, have come in the Premier League, but our first meeting with the Mackems came in Division 3, in the 1987/88 season, a 4:2 defeat away at Roker Park in October 87 was followed by the infamous ‘mud slide’ game at Springfield Park in March 1988 which ended 2:2.
We have never met in the League Cup, though we do have an FA Cup win to brag about, 5th January 2008 we secured a 0:3 away win at the Stadium of Light, goals from Paul Scharner, a McShane og and David Cotterill saw the Latics advance into the 4th round.
We have also met Sunderland at Wembley. “No we haven’t” I hear some of you disclaim, yes we have, in the Mercantile Credit Centenary Tournament.
To celebrate the centenary of the Football League a tournament was held at Wembley Stadium in April 1988, 16 clubs qualified based on their recent league form, and matches were played over the weekend of 16th and 17th of April. Latics and Sunderland met in the first round, the game finished goalless and went to penalties with the Latics winning the shootout.
We went out in the ¼ finals, losing to the eventual runners-up, Sheffield Wednesday, that game ended 1-1 but this time we lost on pens.
We started this campaign off with a trip to the Stadium of Light, going down 2:1 after taking the lead with a Gwion Edwards goal.
Last season we managed to do the double over the Mackems, a very creditable away win at the Stadium of Light in December, Kyle Joseph striking in the 16th minute with our only shot of the game, an excellent backs to the wall performance ensured the three points and a clean sheet came back to Wigan.
Back in April we secured the points at the DW Stadium with goals from Will Keane (42) and Callum Lang (58) after Charlie Wyke had given the visitors a 32nd minute lead.
