Any Previous? Latics v Cheltenham Town

Latics entertain Cheltenham Town at the DW Stadium on Saturday as we get back to League 1 matters following our exploits in the Carabao Cup.

Having faced Cheltenham just twice previously there isn’t a lot of history between the two clubs. Those two meetings came in a historic season for the Latics, as we swept all aside to clinch the League Division 2 (League 1) title bagging 100 points and finishing 14 clear of second placed Crewe Alexandra.

The first meeting came on the opening day of the 2002/03 season, Latics travelled down to Whaddon Road to face newly promoted Cheltenham and came home with all the points courtesy of a 6th minute Andy Liddell strike and Lee McCulloch’s 25th minute effort as he flourished in his new role as an attacking left sided midfielder. 5,138 in attendance.

The return fixture and the then JJB Stadium was a bit of a dour affair, nothing in the game to warm the 6,171 spectators as the game finished goalless, the Latics though remained top of the table.

I can’t find highlights of either game, we must have been using Betamax back then.
