Any Previous? Latics v Cheltenham Town

Latics entertain Cheltenham Town at the DW Stadium on Saturday as we get back to League 1 matters following our exploits in the Carabao Cup.

 

Having faced Cheltenham just twice previously there isn’t a lot of history between the two clubs. Those two meetings came in a historic season for the Latics, as we swept all aside to clinch the League Division 2 (League 1) title bagging 100 points and finishing 14 clear of second placed Crewe Alexandra.

 

The first meeting came on the opening day of the 2002/03 season, Latics travelled down to Whaddon Road to face newly promoted Cheltenham and came home with all the points courtesy of a 6^th minute Andy Liddell strike and Lee McCulloch’s 25^th minute effort as he flourished in his new role as an attacking left sided midfielder. 5,138 in attendance.

 

The return fixture and the then JJB Stadium was a bit of a dour affair, nothing in the game to warm the 6,171 spectators as the game finished goalless, the Latics though remained top of the table.

 

I can’t find highlights of either game, we must have been using Betamax back then.
