Wigan Athletic and Stoke City have met on 35 occasions down the years. The Potters are having the best of it at the moment, 13 wins to the Latics 9.
Our first meeting came in the 1990/91 season, the 10th November, a League Division 3 game, Stoke winning 2:0 at the Victoria Ground.
The return fixture at Springfield Park was a real entertaining affair and the subject of this week’s classic encounter.
Our last meeting with Stoke came back in February this year, FA Cup 4th round tie away at the Britannia Stadium, Latics losing that game 2:0. The last meeting between the two clubs at the DW Stadium was on 30th June 2020, a 3:0 home win but the events of the following day put that result into insignificance.
Classic Encounter
23rd February 1991, Springfield Park, the Latics did a demolition job on Stoke City, two goals from Phil Daley and one apiece for Darren Patterson and Don Page gave us a 4:0 victory that ultimately led to the sacking of Stoke manager Alan Ball the following day.
Kevin Langley also struck one against the post, both sets of fans chanting “Ball Out” at the end of the game.
