Any Previous? Latics v Blackpool

Latics and Blackpool have met 49 times down the years with the Latics having slightly the better of things with 21 wins to Blackpool’s 18.

Our first meeting came on the 24th November 1979, an FA Cup 1st round tie away at Bloomfield Road, Colin Methven scoring for the Latics in a 1:1 draw.

The replay came at Springfield Park four days later, a crowd of 14,589 witnessed a Latics 2:0 win under the lights, Frank Corrigan and Tommy Gore on the score sheet

The last meeting was one to forget from our point of view, 26th January 2021, deep in administration, the club was in a very precarious position, Blackpool taking full advantage of our misfortunes to win 0:5 at the DW Stadium.

Classic Encounter

07th March 2000, Latics in 4th spot in League Division 2 entertained a Blackpool side fighting for survival at the wrong end of the table, an entertaining game finished 5:1 to the Latics despite an early scare.

Liddell, Griffiths, Haworth, Barlow and Sheridan all on the score sheet.

Meet The Ref - Latics v Blackpool

Latics face Blackpool on Saturday at the DW Stadium, the referee for the game will be Portsmouth official, Andy Davies.

Andy Davies

Davies is a very rare breed in the referee circles having been a professional football player for Gillingham, Portsmouth and Yeovil, before injury forced him to retire at the tender age of 28.

Not one to feel sorry for himself, Andy immediately through himself into becoming a ref and he graduated rapidly onto the National List in 2012 and two years later he was taking charge of Championship games.

Since becoming an EFL referee Andy Davies has taken charge of 333 games, issued 1113 yellow and 6 red cards, pointing to the penalty spot on 91 occasions.

Previous Games

This will be Andy Davies’ twelfth Latics game, his first was our Championship 2:2 draw against Wolves at Molineux in the 2014/15 season.

Davies has already refereed the Latics twice this season, both away and we won them both Rotherham in October and Birmingham back in August where he wrongly dismissed Joe Bennett after 10 minutes.

Andy Davies’ most recent Blackpool game came earlier this season, 16 August, a 0:1 away win at QPR.
