The two clubs have met 12 times down the years, Latics’ with six wins to Oxford’s five and just the one draw, things are pretty tight between the two clubs.
The first game came back in December 1982, a crowd of 4,008 braved a bitter cold day, snow was covering the ground and the sun was shining.
A close game saw Jim Smith’s Oxford turn out 0:1 winners with Latics remaining in 13th spot in the table. It was our first ever season at this level, following promotion from Division 4 the previous May, we finished the campaign off in 18th spot.
Fast forward to 2017 as the Latics and Oxford met for the first time in over 16 years, a pre-Christmas delight saw us record our biggest ever away win in the Football League, a hat-trick by Will Grigg, a brace from Max Power and a goal apiece by Nick Powell and Gavin Massey, cementing our place at the top of League 1 on our way to being crowned Champions at the end of that particular season.
Last campaign Oxford did the double over us, winning both games by the same score-line, 2:1, the game at the Kassam in February had a bit of drama attached to it, a smell of burning during half-time was confirmed as an actual fire and the restart was delayed as the Emergency Services were called to deal with the situation. Play eventually resumed and despite Callum Lang giving Latics the lead on 56 minutes Oxford came back to win the game.
The stand-out match just has to be the seven goal spectacle back in 2017.
